I'm going to ask today! she thought with determination, but her body didn't seem to listen as she shuffled her paws timidly, hiding in the shelter of the apprentice's den. Her whole attention was cast towards the medicine cat's den. The sun cast a light ray towards the den, but it still wasn't able to penetrate the darkness of the den yet. Trying to build up some courage, she began to slowly make her way towards the medicine cat's den. Her eyes darted around warily, making sure no one saw her. Luckily, not many cats were around and those that were paid no attention to her. She finally reached the den and the musty smell of moss and herbs hit her scent glands. Most cats would cringe from the bitter smell, but to her, it was inviting. She entered the cool den and looked around curiously. Her ears pricked for any signs of Darksong but so far didn't detect any. The overwhelming smell of herbs masked the scent of the medicine cat too. "Um...hello?"Larkpaw called to the darkness nervously.

Darksong found himself in the vast forest of Starclan, speaking with warrior ancestors he knew well. His attitude, however, was not much different with them than anyone else in the clan.
"Do I really have to train an apprentice? You know I can't stand those lazy young cats....."
A tortie she-cat with amber eyes that matched his answered, "Of course you do, my son.....and do not worry, Starclan has chosen carefully. Do you doubt your ancestors?"
"Never." Darksong answered flatly, "I'm just not sure I'm cut out to have an apprentice."
"You'll be fine." She responded with chuckle and brushed against him, "I know you have a kind heart buried in there, and you have lots of knowledge to share."
He struggled to believe her words, but accepted that this was something he had to do for his clan. One question still bothered him though, "Who has Starclan chosen?"
A smirk played upon the tortie's lips, "You will find out soon enough....much sooner than you might think."
Darksong wanted to know more, but before he could speak anymore words the world around him began spinning and his mother and the green grasses of Starclan disappeared. For a few short moments, he saw nothing but swirling blackness. Right before he was awoken, he saw a quick flash of something and heard wings flap.
Before he could even have time to fully awaken and ponder the dream, he heard a timid voice call into his den. Sighing, he stood up and stretched. Leaving his nest that was tucked into the back corner of his den, he spotted the young she-cat that had called out.
It was one of the apprentices, but her name he just couldn't recall. He didn't think much of forgetting apprentices' names though, they were just a big lazy blur to him most of the time.
Since this apprentice wasn't being obnoxious and he couldn't really remember her ever doing anything to bother him before, he held back his bad attitude when he answered her, "What do you want?" Well, he wasn't 100% nice, but there wasn't nearly as much anger in his voice as usual.

Larkpaw nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard Darksong's voice. She whipped around, spotting a pair of glowing eyes in the darkness of the den before the tom padded out into the the dim lighting the sun managed to penetrate inside the medicine cat's den. Larkpaw tried to let her bristling fur lie flat but all she could do was tremble. Her eyes averted away from Darksong's stern gaze. The young tabby seemed to shrink back as her ears flattened, as if she wished she could disappear. "U-Um....I-I wanted to ask if.....if-um..."the tabby stammered, her paws shuffling nervously and her voice trailing away.
C'mon stupid furball! Just ask!The worst answer is no!she scolded herself. But she really did fear the answer "no".
"I...uh....nevermind..."she quickly mewed, starting to back away slowly.

The young she-cat struggled with her words and seemed terrified. Darksong guessed his usual air about him had scared her, like it did most cats. It wasn't like he wanted to scare others, it's just the way he was. It seemed that she wanted to ask him something, but changed her mind out of fear. He figured he should apologize and try to figure out what she wanted, "Sorry, just kinda groggy after that nap...what do you need? Promise I won't bite your head off or anything." He chuckled, hoping to lighten the mood a bit.
He figured she was after some herbs, or maybe someone got hurt. Why would she shy away so quickly then? Silly pansy apprentices, Darksong scoffed in his head. He studied her a bit, still trying to figure out what her name was....then it came to him. Larkpaw. Then something else began gnawing at the back of his mind; Was the bird in my dream a lark?

Larkpaw paused, noticing Darksong seemed to be trying to become friendlier to her. She hesitated, stil slightly scared but something brought her courage back up. "Um...Darksong...I,"the young tabby she-cat began, her paws shuffling nervously. Her amber eyes were directed towards the ground, afraid to meet Darksongs. "I-um- noticed you didn't have an apprentice. So...I-I was wondering if you were looking for one,"she mewed quietly, her last words sounding much stronger as she managed to raise her head and look directly into Darksong's eyes, hope flaring within them.

As the young apprentice finally stuttered her words out, the whole picture became quite clear to Darksong. Shy little Larkpaw was who StarClan had chosen...or at least it appeared so. He supposed it could of been worse, but he still wasn't impressed. Then again, he hadn't ever met an apprentice he liked, even when he was one.
When Larkpaw finally looked him in the eye, he could see how much she wanted this. It pained him just to think about what training her would be like, but it had to be done. It wasn't like Darksong could be medicine cat forever. His mother told him it would be fine, and she wouldn't lie.
"Well actually..." He began, not sure how to explain it to her, "I just heard from StarClan about needing to get an apprentice. I mean, I'll have to run it by Stonestar first, but if you really want the position....it's yours." Darksong still seriously doubted his mentoring skills, but if it was destined by StarClan, everything would surely work out fine.

Larkpaw flinched and flattened her ears as she prepared for Darksong to reject her. Evey cat in the Clan knew how ill-temepered Darksong was towards any apprentice. The chance of her being his apprentice was as likely as if Starclan themselves came down and licked her on the nose. But when Darksong grudgingly accepted her, the young she-cat's eyes flew open in surprise and shock. Jaws gaping, she stared up at the medicine cat, feeling a bubble of hope and happiness beginning to spring up from the depths of her spirit. "Y-You mean it?"she mewed, eyes shining with happiness. For once, the shy tabby felt sure she had chosen the right path for her paws to follow. "Thank you so much! I promise I won't let you down!"the she-cat purred happily, tail sticking straight up in the air.
